Les Amis de la Forêt Ouareau (The Friends of the Ouareau Forest) is an organization created in order to protect the 160 km2 of the provincial park with the same name against an abusive forestry.
We are convinced that a new kind of forestry, one that respects Nature, is needed for all public forests in Quebec.
92 % of Quebec’s forests are public land and, as such, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks. However, big forestry corporations hold guarantees for volumes of wood granted by the government. Their use of big machinery combined with extensive forestry methods, including clear cutting, does not go along very well with other ways of using the territory like tourism or trade with non-timber forest products (NTFP), not to mention the protection of this fragile ecosystem.
